The Emergence of PACE

By Mauricio Lopez, BCSC PACE Marketing Director.

When I reflect on the remarkable innovations of the past 25 years, I’m struck by how far humanity has progressed. An invention is something entirely new and useful—a device, process, or creation that didn’t exist before and now helps solve problems by boosting efficiency, safety, and accessibility. These breakthroughs have reshaped society as we know it. Think about Wi-Fi, smartphones, online banking, the Google search engine, online marketplaces, and scientific advances such as stem cell research. Add GPS, flat-screen TVs, YouTube, 3D printing, fitness trackers, electric vehicles, streaming platforms—and now, of course, AI (artificial intelligence).

Yet one extraordinary innovation with a truly life-changing impact often goes unnoticed:  Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE). First established in 1973 in San Francisco, PACE has evolved over time much like Apple refining the iPhone or Nike enhancing its footwear. Today, it has expanded across the country, becoming a trusted and highly effective model of care for older adults who are frail, medically complex, or otherwise vulnerable. With access to advanced medical equipment, medications, therapy, dental care, and—perhaps most importantly—peace of mind for families, PACE represents a groundbreaking step forward in compassionate, comprehensive elder care.

Brandman Centers for Senior Care (BCSC) PACE, part of Los Angeles Jewish Health, embodies what makes PACE so successful. Its greatest strength lies in its Interdisciplinary Team (IDT)—a dedicated group that includes a primary care physician, nurse, social worker, center director, and many others. This team is the heart of BCSC PACE, working together daily to assess each participant’s needs and deliver personalized, high-quality care. Their collective expertise ensures not only excellent clinical outcomes but also emotional support for both participants and their families.

BCSC PACE carries this mission forward with pride. We recognize that older adults living with chronic conditions need a reliable, culturally inclusive place where comprehensive care is offered under one roof. Our program provides exactly that—a welcoming center where participants receive medical care, social engagement through our Adult Day Health Center, physical and occupational therapy, meaningful activities, caregiver support, prescription management, dental and vision services, nutrition support, transportation, and much more.

As one of California’s leading PACE programs, BCSC PACE meets rigorous standards set by the Department of Health Services and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. But beyond regulatory excellence, what defines us most is our unwavering commitment to those we serve and where innovation and compassion come together to create a model of care that transforms lives’ every day.

I’m confident that the future will bring even more PACE programs to communities across the nation. The PACE model is here to stay—growing and adapting alongside human ingenuity and medical advancement. Our mission, now and always, is to enhance the quality of life for older adults, protecting their health, dignity, and well-being for years to come. As Robert Greenwood, senior vice president of the National PACE Association, explains, “Everyone acknowledges that the number of seniors needing long-term care services and supports is growing quickly each year. No one thinks we should build more nursing homes to meet this need. We need more programs like PACE that provide a high quality of life across settings and save taxpayer dollars compared with traditional long-term care approaches.”
